HIA Meeting – March 10: Marvin Appel of Systems & Forecast

“HOW TO USE MACD IN YOUR TRADING: PEARLS, PITFALLS & A HIGH-YIELD BOND STRATEGY”

  • Main Program 8:30am – 10:15
  • SIGs begin at 10:30am
  • Joint meeting with AAII

Marvin Appel
President, Signalert Asset Management

The moving average convergence/divergence indicator (MACD) has remained a popular trading tool since Gerald Appel developed it nearly 40 years ago. This presentation will introduce the indicator and describe how you can use it as a trend-following indicator so you can jump on board with potentially strong market trends. Marvin Appel will also discuss using MACD to identify when the market is overextended and likely to change direction. In the second part of the talk, Appel will present a strategy for trading high-yield bond mutual funds designed to remain invested during the majority of the time that the market climate is favorable, while reducing exposure to the significant corrections that batter high-yield bonds from time to time.

YOU WILL LEARN

  • How to use the moving average convergence/divergence indicator (MACD) to identify market trends
  • How to use MACD to identify potential reversal points
  • How to trade high-yield bond mutual funds

Barry Scoles (Georgetown Mortgage LLC) – Reverse Mortgages

As of Q2 2017, US homeowners age 62 or older hold $6 Trillion of equity in their homes. For the average homeowner this represents over 50% of their total net worth. Many Financial Advisors view Reverse Mortgages as an attractive way to improve retirement portfolio duration and to hedge longevity risk. According to Michael Gordon, Managing Director and Head of Retirement Insurance and Strategic Solutions at BNY Mellon, “Reverse Mortgages are an important asset class that will stabilize the fee base of asset managers and reduce the fiduciary risk of their clients running out of money in retirement.” For these reasons and more, getting the facts about FHA-Insured Reverse Mortgages will be time well spent.

HIA Meeting – June 10 – Andrew Oskoui – University Center

HIA Meeting – June 10 – Andrew Oskoui – University Center

Andrew Oskoui, CFA, will be presenting on the strategy of his firm, Blue Tower Asset Management. It is a stock market strategy which aims to outperform the market through superior security selection. Two dominant approaches used on Wall Street today are quantitative investing and value investing. Blue Tower’s philosophy is to bridge the best practices of these two approaches by using recommendations generated by algorithms to create short lists of companies. These companies are then evaluated using classic value investing due diligence methods. This combined approach finds hidden opportunities that most people might overlook while at the same time avoiding value traps to which a purely quantitative strategy may fall victim.

Andrew will also describe the methods of odd-lot tender offer arbitrage. It is hoped that audience members will leave the talk with a new tool which may be useful to them during future market opportunities.

Andrew Oskoui, CFA, is the portfolio manager and founder of Blue Tower Asset Management, an independent investment advisory offering a value investing strategy in managed accounts. He lives in Austin, Texas. Prior to his career in finance, Andrew worked as a biomedical engineer on research projects involving pharmaceutics, nanotechnology, and genetics.  Continue reading
